On July 11, 1960 the first issue of stamps that make up the 1960 Pictorials issue were released. The lowest value on that day was the one penny. The lower value stamps depicted native New Zealand flowers. The 1d showed the flowers and fruit of the Karaka. The Karaka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karaka_(tree)) is evergreen tree that can be found over most of New Zealand (apart from the deep south). In initial issue of this stamp was on ‘ordinary’ paper with this changing to ‘chalky’ paper around 1965. In addition this stamp was used in a stamp vending machine, for which the printing details differ.
However, for now, here is the 1960 Karaka as issued on July 11, 1960.
